Greetings!
"We're living in topsy-turvy times, and I think that what causes the topsy-turvy feeling is the inadequacy of old forms of thought to deal with the new experiences. I've heard it said that the only real learning results from hang-ups, where instead of expanding the branches of what you already know, you have to stop and drift laterally for a while until you come across something that allows you to expand the roots of what you already know. Everyone's familiar with that. I think the same thing occurs with whole civilizations when expansion is needed at the roots.

Remarkably, the above was written 25 years ago. May your holiday season be bright with abundance and dreams come true!

There is a sign-up sheet for next year in this issue. Make a New Year's resolution and sign up to host a Salon in 2000. It's a great way to start a new century! If you don't want to have it at your home or studio, there are alternative spaces such as the Dance Studio at the Monmouth County Arts Council but its best if one person is in charge of setting it up locally. Which brings to mind another issue - It appears that everyone is so busy that receiving the calendar every two months is not enough notice for most people. So make calls, send email or do whatever you want to remind your friends of the upcoming salon. I do not have the time or energy to do monthly mailings as well as "Loose Leaf . But, if we each host a salon and help a little bit, no one person will be overwhelmed. The number at the Monmouth County Arts Council is 732-212-1890. ARTAKE is a member. Also, most towns have a community hall available to use for free by residents of that town. In Rumson it is Bingham Hall. Call your local Borough Hall for more information on this.

Merri Ferrell's story telling event was cancelled due to unexpected drama and delays for Merri on her trip to Florida to help her parents move. Among other things, her transmission broke down on the way and a hurricane swept thorough Manalapan, Florida the day after she arrived!

Colleen Lineberry has moved to Avon-by-the-Sea and says it is "so nourishing to be only one house away from the beach. She is still looking for someone to rent her beautiful house in Ocean Township. Call her at 732-775-6147 if you or someone you know might be interested.

Please remember to send your writing and art to Sheilagh Casey for possible inclusion in the next issue of "AHA! Sheilagh's address is:
                        18 First Street

                        Rumson, NJ 07760

Her e-mail address is sheilagh@aol.corn

Many thanks go to Robin Hertlein and Michael Toal for performing with me at Barnes & Noble in Long Branch for the October Arts and Humanities Month presentation by the Monmouth County Carts Council. We did an improv piece on Birds. Also, representing ARTAKE that evening, Freda Karpf read an excerpt from her latest book, "Nic"

Jack Pitzer (AKA Hinge) has been touring this year with the "Bloodhound Gang which is very popular in Europe. Hinge will be traveling to Australia in the New Year but before then he will be in Monmouth County over the holidays. Hinge told me that Kate Grady survived the earthquake in Taiwan because she was in a part of the city that was not badly hit. Since that time, Kate has been helping the less fortunate.

Lorraine Niemela will be hosting our annual New Jersey Holiday Gifting and Give-away Salon. This means you bring (1) a small wrapped gift to exchange (handmade or under $5) and (2) something used that you don't want any more. The give away item doesn't need to be wrapped. In addition, this year we will donate as a group to The Center (for people living with AIDS) in Asbury Park. So, please bring a bag of clothes, toys, food, etc. that you no longer use as a contribution to this cause. The Center mostly needs very practical things such as large size (male and female) sweatshirts and pants, socks, hats, gloves and jackets. Please bring only that which is clean and in good shape. The food should be non-perishable. If you can't join us on December 10th at Lorraine's house but want to donate anyway to The Center you can call them at 732-774-3416.
